Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station, and in 3 hours and 20 minutes you'll arrive at Shin-Aomori Station — where even the air feels different. Aomori Prefecture (青森県), at the very tip of Japan's mainland, is one of Tohoku's best-kept secrets that most international travelers have yet to discover.
In summer, towering 5-meter-tall illuminated floats parade through the streets during the spectacular Nebuta Festival. In autumn, the 14-kilometer walking trail along the Oirase Gorge (奥入瀬渓流) is draped in blazing fall colors, making it one of the most breathtaking gorge treks in all of Japan.
At the Towada Art Center, you can encounter works by world-renowned artists like Yayoi Kusama, Ron Mueck, and Do Ho Suh. In Hirosaki (弘前), Japan's largest apple-growing region, you can go apple picking and sip on local apple cider.
Aomori is also the birthplace of the literary great Osamu Dazai (太宰治) — a destination where literature, art, nature, and festivals all come together for a deeply rewarding journey.
Getting there: Tokyo Station → Tohoku Shinkansen → Shin-Aomori Station, approx. 3 hours 20 minutes (around 17,000 yen / ~$115). A rental car is recommended for getting to Oirase and Hirosaki.
