Hop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo and you'll reach Kanazawa (金沢) in just 2 hours and 30 minutes. Step out of the station and you're greeted by the massive wooden Tsuzumi-mon Gate (鼓門) — one of the world's 14 most beautiful station gates.
Stroll through Kenrokuen (兼六園), one of Japan's top three gardens, wander the Edo-era teahouse district of Higashi Chaya, and fill up on the freshest seafood donburi from the Sea of Japan at Omicho Market.
An hour's drive from Kanazawa brings you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawago (白川郷). This mountain hamlet of 114 thatched-roof gassho-style farmhouses transforms into a fairy-tale scene when winter snow settles on the rooftops. The nighttime illumination feels almost otherworldly.
Head further south and you'll find Takayama (高山), the "Little Kyoto" with its atmospheric sake brewery streets, followed by Gero Onsen (下呂温泉), one of Japan's three most celebrated hot spring towns.
Getting there: Tokyo → Kanazawa via Hokuriku Shinkansen, 2 hrs 30 min / Nagoya → Takayama via JR Takayama Main Line, approx. 2 hrs 20 min. A rental car is recommended for easy access to Shirakawago.
